When your last name starts with the letter “A” and you are a Canadian (proud one too) doesn’t it make sense to call yourself Mike Eh! to stand out from the crowd?

That is the rationale behind my new online handle – Mike Eh!

Thanks to Bob and Doug McKenzie, Canadians have been associated with the expression “eh!”. To be honest though, I never say “eh!” unless I’m intentionally saying it. We’re expected to say it, so I’ll say it for comedic effect. I never say it as my natural way of speaking.

Apparently it is also slipping out of usage with most Canadians according to an article in last week’s Toronto Star.

But maybe with the approaching 25th anniversary of “Strange Brew” we can keep this tradition alive, eh?

I recently went to the HomeDepot.ca website to buy a garbage shed. You know one of those boxes made out of plastic so the raccoons won’t get into my garbage. I typed “garbage” into the search box and here is what was returned:

I’m steamed. First off I wasn’t looking for anything to do with a garage and if you are going to correct me, why not do it the way that Google does (which in itself is infuriating): “Did you mean garage?”

I tried the same search at Canadian Tire and got the results I wanted.

Which can mean only one thing to me – even though the website I went to was homedepot.CA as in CANADA they are really using American English as the basis for their searches … which only infuriates me even more!

It gets worse though, when I called to complain the customer service rep told me the correct term was TRASH, not garbage!

Needless to say I won’t be shopping at Home Depot any time soon.

I’d always thought the fear of Friday the 13th was triskaidekaphobia, but apparently that’s just the fear of the NUMBER 13. The actual fear of Friday the 13th is paraskavedekatriaphobia or paraskevodekatriaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia. Honestly I didn’t make up that last one! I came across it in an article in today’s Toronto Star and looked it up on Google.

Just bumped into my boss’s boss in the hall. Ken’s a biker at heart and I was razzing him for being here instead of at Port Dover with all the other bikers. For those who don’t know it, Port Dover is a small Lake Erie town that every Friday the 13th is taken over by bikers of all shapes and sizes.

The Friday the 13th tradition started in 1981. Chris Simons and approximately 25 friends, through word of mouth, got together at the Commerical Hotel {The Zoo}, now known as Angelos of Dover. It was in November and it was Friday the 13th. They had such a good time they decided they should do it every Friday the 13^th. And so the tradition was born. Every Friday the 13th thereafter, the number of people coming to the event has increased.

This year marks the 25^th Anniversary. Now I’m no biker, but I’d love to head down there one time just to check it out.
